The nuclear sign. This bit must be like, super-important..

Forget AI and bargain-basement writers. Work with a freelance copywriter who will map out your website from A-Z.

Look – I get it.

But there's a chasm between what a low-rent copywriting newbie or generative AI can do for your business and what an experienced, seasoned pro (that's me) can do.

It's the difference between buying a cut-price jacket from Burton's and a tailor-made suit that was hand-crafted for you

Trust me: great copywriting is really hard to pull off.

That's because the goalposts are shifting.

Today.

Tomorrow.

Next week.

Visitors' attention spans are shrinking all the time.

And even if your website followed best practices two years ago, it's probably out of touch with what customers want and expect today.

So what's the magic ingredient?

Combining 15+ years of award-winning editorial excellence with modern web methodology, I deconstruct and rebuild websites to give them the clarity your customers crave.

I take care of the words, the CTAs, the SEO – even rough layouts. I'm here to make your whole website as future-proof as possible.

Website copywriting is a critical process that underpins your ENTIRE business. So don't wing it...

Everyone's a writer these days.

Clarity.

How partnering with me as your website copywriter can

your business...

Does this seem painfully familiar?

Let me take a wild punt that you've spent serious cash on your website, forking out a small fortune on developers, designers and writers (although maybe you wrote it yourself).

And despite all your hard work and fast-shrinking chequebook, you're simply not getting the web traffic you know you deserve. Or when people do arrive at your site, they leave quicker than a toddler chasing an iPad. It's infuriating! The only thing you're 100% sure about is it just isn't working.

Does this sound better?

What if the people arriving at your site instantly understood where you were coming from? And your data showed them gleefully skipping through your website and clicking on all those things you'd been dreaming they would. Such as 'buy now' – or sending an email.

Find out how an outsider can write killer copy for your business!

Can you weather the cost of lost opportunities?

When a website isn't clear, or there are inconsistencies that cause the tiniest flicker of doubt, people leave. It's that simple. We're so spoiled for choice today that website shortcomings – no matter how small – make us seek out someone else who has what we need instead.

Any flaws in your website point people to the exit and slam the door on the way out.

Why you want a copywriter who's a little bit 'obsessive'

I work with founders and marketing teams who instinctively know their website could be better. Driven by a near obsession with clarity, I root out those inconsistencies and shortcomings that are stopping your website from achieving its full potential (check out some of my 'micro-roasts' to see what I mean).

Why put your faith in me? Because I have a 25-year background as a writer and editor – 15 of them in digital copywriting. But that's all by the by – what really makes me worth hiring is that I write websites every day. And I love whipping them into shape and watching them fly.

So what does hiring me as your website copywriter look like?

1

First, I work with owners and marketing teams to assess what they need. A combination of emails, questionnaires and video calls help me root out what kind of copy will have the most impact.

2

3

Next, I study your customers and competitors to get a detailed understanding of what people want – and work out what tactics successful sites use to give them that.

Then I create a detailed visual plan of the pages your website will need, how they link up, and the elements that make up each page. Take these to your designer and hit the ground running.

4

Finally, I carefully craft your copy, weaving in your story, your brand voice and the strongest possible calls to action.

That's the brief version – my copywriting services also take care of keyword research, title tags, meta descriptions and other SEO work, as well as a comprehensive round of revisions.

Freelance copywriting FAQ

Is using a freelance website copywriting service really necessary if I want to attract new clients?

Freelance? No. Copywriting? Yes. You can choose between an agency or a freelancer, though the latter is generally more affordable. What an experienced freelance website writer who specialises in web content really understands is how to communicate key messages in a succinct way. Company owners sometimes over-complicate things when trying to write their own sites. And marketing teams sometimes just don't give good copy. A freelance copywriting specialist like me can help with all of your content creation, and in an SEO-friendly manner, too. My goal as a writer is to give you two things: great copy that has the potential to help you rank, and a clear idea of how your website will work. So it's not just a Word doc – it's a whole package of what goes where and why. Most freelance copywriter services you'll find don't extend much beyond a basic text document. My version is a suite of solutions that help you create or reshape a website so that it looks great, reads well – and converts. It's important to separate what I do from many other copywriters. All too often, text you've paid a copywriter to write will sit in a drawer while you wonder what to do next. With my approach, you get off to a flying start. Drop me a line and I'll explain it a bit more.

Hey, Mr Website Writer! Why is my site not performing as well as I want it to?

If you hire a writer for website content who doesn't understand the myriad components that make up a successful site (or the copywriting process behind it), you're going to end up with a mediocre website. Your web content writer will likely deliver something more 'meh' than 'wow!'. So you may need to shake the old content up a little. Keep asking yourself how you (or your new web content specialist) can improve things. Your website needs constant fine-tuning. Check out my blog for some content and SEO tips – especially helpful if you're launching a new website. Most UK website content writers have their own sites, so check some of those out for top copywriting tips, too. My #1 tip if your website isn't working well is to ask a friend if you can watch them as they navigate your site. All of the blocks and barriers should quickly become evident.

Haven't you and your fellow copywriters been wiped out by artificial intelligence yet?

Not yet, my friend! But I get it – AI can create copy in the blink of an eye, and for free. So why do people still need a freelance copywriter for websites and their other marketing material? Here's why. AI generated text is basically a mishmash of things that have been written before. It also tends to be written in a very repetitive style that quickly seems annoyingly familiar. In other words, the copy you get back is OK... but it's a country mile from what a professional freelance copywriter can do for you. My own skillset includes: * Understanding your brand and writing consistently in your brand voice. * Humour. Yes, humour! My day job once upon a time was writing dozens of funny articles a month. AI is still a long way from doing 'funny' in a way that doesn't make your toes curl. * Interviewing people. AI, as far as I know, can't do this yet. * Taking an overview, planning a content strategy, and editing copy so that it sings. But I see the appeal of free copy. And I'm no luddite. So if you want to use AI to create your copy and then have an expert with lots of writing and editing experience take a look at it, give me a try. Just hit the 'GET A FREE QUOTE' button at the top of this page, or see my page about AI copy editing services under the 'Services' link at the top.

What does it cost to book a UK website copywriter for my content marketing or web copy?

Ah, the $64,000 question. The truth is: we're all different. UK freelance copywriter rates range from £200 a day to £1,500 a day or more. Me? Tell me what you need, and I will give you a quote within 48hrs. One thing to bear in mind if you hire a freelancer is that it will usually work out cheaper than going with a copywriting agency. Lower overheads, and all that ;) That said, the range of freelance copywriters UK businesses can turn to is vast, and varies from entry-level writers to seasoned professional copywriters with years of experience. So you get what you pay for. But here's one key thing to remember: carefully planning out and writing a website takes quite a bit of time. If you want something you can really use, it's not going to be cheap. Check out my freelance copywriter blog for my thoughts on what makes good copy and why it takes time.

What else do you do apart from content writing for web sites and web copywriting?

Good question! My freelance copywriter services cover everything from email writing to brochures, landing pages and reports. I look after: * Brochure copywriting * Company report writing * White paper copywriting * Advertorial copywriting and sponsored content * Copywriting for email sequences * LinkedIn descriptions and ghostwritten articles * Copywriting for SEO (search engine optimization) + Online marketing (landing pages, blogs, forms, microcopy, Facebook ads etc.) Plus any other kind of freelance writing where persuasive copy and rock-solid written skills are needed. Website writing is my bread and butter, but I do more than just words. I can even help you create your whole website – including briefing designers and developers. It's my mission to be the friendly neighbourood copywriter UK clients and those from further afield can rely on. Why not hit the green 'GET A FREE QUOTE' button at the top and we can discuss your next copywriting project? I'm very much a copywriter for hire and sometimes have availability within a week or two of initial contact. But not always :)

How do I become a copywriter? I hear it's well paid and easy to get into.

I've got some disappointing news for you. I can't think of a worse time to be starting a career in copywriting. Here's why: 1. Freelance copywriting has been flagged up by people who should know better as a classic "easy job anyone can start tomorrow" on LinkedIn, TikTok and other platforms. That advice is horseshit. It's like saying anyone who can do maths or owns a calculator can be an accountant. You can't. 2. There are hundreds of thousands of other copywriting hopefuls to compete with – many of them turned on to it by those muppets on TikTok insisting that copywriting is a path to easy money. You completed a £200 copywriting course from some spurious academy? It means nothing. Sorry. 3. You may wait months or even years for your first paid assignment. 4. The website you create to help advertise your business will be brand new, so you'll probably struggle to rank. To help, you'll be tempted to buy spammy backlinks to boost your domain authority. Expect more trouble to ensue. And if you turn to AI to rapidly populate your new site with content, your audience – probably 2-3 people a month – will be less than impressed. Also, you'll have zero testimonials, so people will doubt your ability to deliver. 5. AI is wiping out the copywriting market – literally obliterating it, especially at the bottom end of the talent pool, which is where you'll unfortunately be coming in as a newcomer. 6. Every copywriter I spoke to in 2024 complained of it being a very challenging year. And these people know what they are doing – and have many years of experience. 7. There are more writers around today than ever. As well as all the TikTok-inspired hopefuls, there are thousands of ex-journalists and PRs who moved into copywriting as their own industries were decimated. It has literally never been more competitive... and there is arguably less work than there's been in decades. I could go on, but you get the idea. It's heartbreaking to say, but I do not recommend copywriting as a career change in 2025.

Does a copywriter specialising in websites come up with creative ideas – or do I need someone else?

I can't speak for everyone, but I love coming up with creative ideas. As well as coming up with website concepts and copy, I've recently worked on ads to appear on tube trains, sales-focused landing pages, marketing emails, quote forms (!) and LinkedIn ads. I've been helping people to tackle creative challenges and develop new ideas for more than two decades – brand story/brand voice included. Drop me a line for some examples of my work across multiple digital platforms – whether you need a blog copywriter, SEO content writing or something else. Keeping things broad means I can deliver the goods as a web copywriter, conversion copywriter, email writer and basically function as your go-to writing partner for any of your messaging. I can help with a jolly nice brochure or white-paper, too!

I need some winning words pronto. You available? How do I get in touch?

Just send me an email or call me (details at the bottom of this page) or hit the big green 'GET A FREE QUOTE' button at the top and we can get the ball rolling – whatever your copywriting project or target market. When you're looking to hire a content writer or someone who can help make marketing copy sparkle, I have a great track record and I'm here to help. Some clients have very kindly told me I'm one of the best UK freelance copywriters (I blush!), and my testimonials and reviews back that up. I know I go the extra mile to deliver way more than just copy. I've been writing professionally for well over 25 years, and bymikepeake.com, the Mike Peake freelance copywriting website, has been around for more than a dozen years. If you forget my name the next time you need someone, just type 'freelance copywriter near me' or 'UK website copywriter' and my little blue icon will come up eventually!

Can a website copywriter who knows about SEO get me on page one on Google?

Maybe yes. But probably no. It all depends on your sector and what keyword you are trying to rank for. If you're trying to rank for something obscure, such as 'tartan tea cosies for dolls houses', then a little SEO work by your web copywriter can work wonders. That coveted #1 spot on Google may even be yours for the taking. But if you want to get on page one for something more competitive such as 'Lawyer London', a freelance copywriter with SEO experience can only do so much. We can optimise copy for you so that it reads brilliantly (Google likes and rewards this), is easy to scan, contains relevant keywords (and related terms) in the right quantity, and advise on internal linking. We can also help ensure we address search intent and do our best to meet Google's E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authority and trust) expectations, but that's pretty much it. SEO copywriters can't control the many other factors that determine your SERP rankings, which include backlinks (a long and potentially expensive process), page speed and design, sitemaps, and other technical aspects of SEO. If your market is competitive, one of the biggest barriers you'll face is building up domain authority for your brand-new URL. If your competitors have been around for years, Google will view you as a relative newbie who has yet to prove its worth, and may rank you accordingly – though this approach seems to have changed in Google's big March 2025 algorithm update, which gave well-written up-and-coming sites the chance to rank well.

About Mike's copyriting work

Mike Peake is an experienced freelance marketing copywriter who specialises in website copywriting. He has also consented to write about himself in the third person for this bit because that's what consultancy-types sometimes do at the end of their homepage – probably to snaffle up a few more keywords, but he assures you this isn't his game here. He has been creating digital and print content for clients for well over 15 years and has helped businesses in Japan, Denmark, Poland, the UAE, Singapore, Finland, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Canada, the USA and Switzerland. Much of his work is for UK-based clients – London especially. The freelance copywriting website, bymikepeake.com, has been in existence since 2011.

Mike has won awards or been part of award-winning teams on five occasions and is committed to continuous learning in the field of web copywriting, content creation and writing about himself in the third person, striving for excellence for every client. Some of the many large organisations Mike has created content for include Harrods, the Sunday Times, Virgin Atlantic, KONE, Singapore Airlines, TITAN Containers, Business Insider, the BBC and NatWest. Smaller clients are jolly well looked after, too.

Contact Mike whenever you need a website copywriter or a general freelance copywriter who has many years of experience and provides first-class creative services. Mike's mission is to promote the 'de-shitification' of websites and give businesses sites that have been properly thought out instead of being chucked together with bits of twigs and some Sellotape. Why not take a moment to read some of his copywriting testimonials to get an idea of how he works – though, be warned, it's an absolute hotbed of third-person indulgence.
